TARZAN

For my niece Katie's 16th birthday (July 16), I took her up to see Tarzan at Tuahcan.  We got there just in time, so we didn't have to sit in the heat of the sun, although without the breeze at times, it got very warm!  The costumes and use of ziplines for vines were fantastic, but I have to admit that I asked Katie afterwards why they didn't include this song or that character - she informed me that I was thinking of the JUNGLE BOOK.  I think the Jungle Book would have been a more exciting play!  I guess I've never really seen Tarzan, the movie!!!  It was really good and we enjoyed our time.  We stayed at Shirley's (in Santa Clara) for the night and then enjoyed doing some shopping and eating in town before heading back to Vegas.
I can't believe Katie's 16 already.  She was born 2 weeks BEFORE I returned home from my mission and she was given my middle name as her middle name, so I guess that makes up for missing the birth!  She's a beautiful redhead - smart, funny, compassionate, talented, and getting way too old way too fast!  I'm glad she likes some of the same things I do - like broadway plays!

Summer Reads

I just finished a good, clean book, Look Again, by Lisa Scottoline.  It was a fast read yesterday as I was trying to beat the heat (114 degrees) by staying inside with all blinds closed!  It's about a single lady - a newspaper reporter - who ends up legally adopting a toddler she sees in the hospital during some interviews.  Two years later she gets one of those white cards in the mail with a picture of a little boy - Have You Seen Him? - and she starts to investigate.  It's interesting the emotional rollercoaster she rides as she is torn to make the best decision - then there's surprise action to the story.  I won't ruin it for you, but I'd recommend it as a good read!  I couldn't put it down about halfway through to the end.

I also finished reading the Lost Symbol by Dan Brown earlier this week.  That one took a little longer to delve into and follow all the technical terminology, but I liked the storyline overall.  This one takes place with the mysteries behind the founding fathers in Washington D.C. and the symbology there.  I've enjoyed his books with all the twists and turns and the intellectual challenge to it.  His books are all very similar in nature, but I find them engaging and page turning once you get into them.

Before that, I enjoyed the book Between Sisters by Kristin Hannah.  This is the second book by her that I've enjoyed.  It's about 2 sisters who were separated in their early youth and grew into different paths - one a highly successful lawyer but "wayward" and the other running a family camping resort with her father and daughter.  Their paths intertwine again - very rockily - and things happen that bring them together as well as provide some real direction for the lawyer sister.  It was very moving and I quite enjoyed it (and only had to skip a few paragraphs!)

Fish Lake Weekend

It's nice to have a group of single friends who are so entirely different individually, but who come together with a some common interests and characteristics.  I have been fortunate during these "prime" years of my life to have such a group around me, who make being 'single' not so bad on most days.  One such is a survivor:  a survivor from being my roommate for 3 years (a couple years ago) - not an easy thing to survive...

Becky - the spunky, funny, light-hearted, spontaneous, compassionate, and strong one of us -  turned the big 4-0 and so we girls (and James) headed up to her family's cabin at Fish Lake (middle of Utah) for her  long weekend birthday bash.  Here's some highlights (just DON'T forget to watch the video at the end!!)

This is where we did a lot of lounging and reading.  There were several elk and deer watching us (and winking at us) hanging on the walls.  Inside and out - it was nice and quiet to read, visit, meditate, and relax!
The loft had 4 beds - perfect for a
slumber party! (James slept downstairs...)
Her dad took us out on his pontoon boat on the lake for a relaxing tour.  We had fun snapping all sorts of fun pictures and daring each other to jump out and swim in the ice water!

Many of Becky's family came up from Richfield for a delicious dutch oven dinner, cake and homemade ice cream.  We gals went in and got her a BBQ Grill for her house and all the 'accessories' she'd need.  Later, we sat out by the fire pit hearing hysterial stories from her dad.

Friday we drove through Capital Reef Nat'l Park and had fun taking funny pictures, picnicing on fresh scones, rock scrambling around a waterfall, and taking what we've termed "Shan Shot" pictures - with us resting our chins on our hands in some place with a view.  So here are - amongst the gnats, ants, and rocks-  a few of our new ones from THIS trip in random places (the original being at a park in Niagra Falls last summer):

The beautiful grove of aspens was from Saturday morning when we took a long dirt road all the way up the other side of the lake (Mytoga point).  The view from up there was amazing, especially watching the dark clouds roll in over the glassy lake.  We got back to the cabin just in time for a great rainfall - which SMELLED soooo good!  It didn't last long and once again we were back out on the porch reading and visiting.

Overall, it was a nice weekend away together.  We each had lots on our minds and enjoyed the "slowing down" of life for a bit in nature - time to think, laugh, read, and play.

On the way home, the roof cargo carrier opened up and my bag of bedding flew out into the desert outside Glendale.  All was recovered, and the cargo carrier was tossed into the dumpster at the gas station.  A comical ending to a nice weekend with the girls!
NOW for the most COMICAL part of our entire trip:
Becky's "School's Out For Summer" blooper!

The Book Collector

It's finally done...the new loft-library!

BEFORE...

AFTER...

I love IKEA...furniture mostly held together by wooden dowels and just a few screws!  Thanks to my hiking buddies, Loralee and Linda, the new shelving is all ready!  I found out how uneven my floor really is - the two side shelves are being "shimmied" by free paint sticks from Lowes!  I took all the books in my house (5 different bookshelves in 3 different rooms) and consolidated them into one big library.  Sadly, many of the shelves are double stacked with books - a row behind the visible ones!  There's everything from my work library to my churchy library to my "just for fun" library and just a few children's books that I use in the university courses.  It felt good to purge some as well - to the D.I.  I'm loving how it all turned out.

Observation:
My dad has a key to my place and has his own  "way" of letting me know that he stopped by to take a nap or enjoy a snack when I was not home.  All the throw pillows stacked/balanced on the coffee table!  I cracked up!

Sometimes I come home to flowers on V-day or my B-day, too.  I love that he does that for me!
